OMG! We Won the Zayed Sustainability Prize for Climate Action!

This is an announcement blog to announce that we have won the prestigious Zayed Sustainability Prize in the Climate Action category! From 5,980 applications worldwide to 33 finalists to be crowned as winners, we are humbled to be recognized among the best.

OMDTZ director, Innocent Maholi, had the honor of attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which started from 13th Jan to 17th Jan where the winners of Zayed Sustainability Price were announced, and we were among the winners. The project will equip communities with the tools to build resilient communities by training them in mapping and data collection so they can create detailed flood risk maps to help with disaster preparedness plans.

The flood risk data has been instrumental in shaping disaster risk reduction and response plans for 45 wards in Dar es Salaam. These efforts have guided great interventions such as drain cleaning and infrastructure repairs, ultimately enhancing community resilience. Moreover, the data has supported initiatives like the World Bank’s water-level monitoring system, providing early flood warnings and improving disaster preparedness.

The award funds will enable us to scale the community mapping initiatives to additional flood-prone areas in Tanzania, including Morogoro and Pwani regions. We plan to expand the use of advanced technologies, such as drone mapping, and invest in capacity-building programs to empower communities.
